Tejinder Singh, Contributor for SCOTUSblog, offers insight on the Supreme Court ruling and what this could mean in the future. White House spokesman Eric Schultz expressed hope at a briefing on Friday that the rules would satisfy groups on both sides of the divide. “Today the administration took several steps to ensure women whose coverage is threatened receive coverage for recommended contraceptive services through their health care plans at no additional cost, as they should be entitled to under the Affordable Care Act , while continuing the administration’s goal of respecting religious beliefs,” he said. Effective immediately, the U.S. will begin allowing faith-affiliated charities, colleges and hospitals to notify the government – rather than their insurers – that they object to birth control on religious grounds.
Obama offers new accommodations on birth control | The Detroit News
The measure allows those groups to notify the government, rather than their insurance company, that birth control violates their religious beliefs. The government is also extending an existing accommodation to some for-profit corporations like Hobby Lobby thats currently available only to nonprofits. That accommodation requires groups to sign a form transferring responsibility for paying for birth control to their insurers or third-party administrators. The dual decisions embrace suggestions included in recent Supreme Court rulings. But theyre unlikely to go far enough to satisfy religious groups. Thats because they would still make the groups complicit in a system that provides birth control through their organizations health plans.

And often, like most anything else in life, it is about timing, about luck. President Obama’s situation today is not unlike President Kennedy’s dilemmas in June of 1963. In one 48-hour period that month, the televised admission of two black students to the segregated University of Alabama challenged a changing America, a Buddhist monk burned himself to death in front of a camera in Saigon and the world was never the same, and Kennedy tried to change the world by giving the greatest speech of his life at American University in an attempt to break the planet’s nuclear siege. That was not the only frightening time in Kennedy’s years. In October of 1962, as he was dealing with the admission of the first black student to the University of Mississippi, he was shown aerial photographs that proved the Soviet Union was establishing nuclear missile bases in Cuba.
