Obama considering ways to plug tax ‘loophole’ himself – Aug. 6, 2014

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) The Obama administration is looking at how it could act on its own to stop companies that want to slash their tax bills by moving overseas. President Obama said officials are “reviewing all of our options” to act without congressional approval to stem the wave of so-called tax inversions. The trend has accelerated in recent years, backed by Wall Street enthusiasm for overseas tax rates that are lower than the highest U.S. rate of 35%. Obama has previously voiced concern with inversions, calling them a blow to ” economic patriotism .” But his administration has not gone further than call for Congress to act.

He said the U.S. would continue to increase its support for initiatives to improve public health, electricity and economic opportunity in Africa, but argued that Africa is better helped through equal economic partnerships than through humanitarian aid. “Africa must know that they will always have a strong and reliable partner in the United States of America,” Obama said at a news conference at the close of the three-day summit in Washington. Earlier in the day, he called on African nations to be forceful in tackling the health, security and government corruption problems that could stunt economic progress on the continent.
