Obama Rushes To Keep Last Year’s Promise Before Address

The president has a pen and he has a phone, and he will use them to take executive action and enlist every American — business owners and workers, mayors and state legislators, young people, veterans, and folks in communities from across the country — in the project to restore opportunity for all, Pfeiffer said. He provided no specifics. Biden Trip Vice President Joe Biden , accompanied by his wife, Jill Biden , will travel to Rochester, New York , the day after Obamas speech to visit Monroe Community College and talk about education and workforce development, the White House said in a statement today. Obama, like his predecessors, has used State of the Union speeches to outline a legislative agenda for the coming year and paint a broad vision for the country. In previous addresses, he has recounted the nations climb out of the recession and outlined hurdles ahead; called for changes to U.S. immigration law; and cited China as a benchmark for academic achievement, mass transit , revamping the economy, or developing clean energy .

Obama to Sex Assault Victims: ‘I’ve Got Your Back’

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, said the GOP wish list includes “expanding trade, approving the Keystone pipeline and promoting education and skills training for those still struggling in this economy.” The traditional State of the Union response from the president’s opposing party will be delivered this year by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., the highest-ranking Republican woman in the House. The move appears to be in part an effort by Republicans to ratchet up their appeals to women, who have sided with Democrats in large numbers in recent presidential elections. While Obama is currently balancing several high-profile foreign policy matters, international issues are expected to get only a brief mention in Tuesday’s speech. The president is expected to note that the long war in Afghanistan will formally end later this year, though he’s not expected to announce any decisions on whether to keep some American troops there after 2014.

Vietnam’s Stock Surge Encourages Ipos

Robert Shiller: I’m still investing in the stock market

Then theyve been surprised by the unemployment and lack of hiring. The stock market, despite record highs, is not correlated to the performance of the overall economy. Stock Market Today: A Buyout for A-B InBev and a Solid Quarter for Unilever

Fearful investors with bunkers full of cash and over-allocations to bonds continue to be held hostage to ultra-low interest rates and the anticipation of the losses that will accompany the inevitable rate hikes. High-quality equities remain one of the few reasonable alternatives when the great rotation occurs. A recovering housing market is likely to send a wealth effect rippling through the economy. The housing market is continuing to transition from purchasers who are investors and speculators to those who intend to occupy the homes they buy. Still, I believe the bias is to the upside, and the greater “risk” remains being out of a rising market rather than being caught in an overheated crashing market.

The stock market in 2014: up, but volatile

The flow will be uneven, as many will be saying the market is overvalued, causing investor skittishness as the year progresses. It will be a noticeable improvement in the economy that will accelerate Fed bond tapering, setting the stage for longer-term bond yields to again move higher. This means the bond market will continue its bearish trend, but the impact may not be as pronounced as many predict, if only because there is no inflation or wage pressure. But the general direction is upward, with the 10-year Treasury getting to the 4 percent range in 2015.

Most assets in ETFs are tracking capitalization-weighted market indexes. These are familiar indexes that were all familiar with. ETFs that track market benchmarks have significantly more assets in them than ETFs that employ other strategies, and continue to attract most of the new asset flow according to Morningstar . The S&P 500 is the largest and most popular index in this category. Non-benchmark following ETFs were introduced in 2003.

Highland/iBoxx Senior Loan ETF Announces Details of January Regular Distribution

With the 10-Year Treasury Note Yield holding steady at approximately 3% and the Fed committed to a near zero Fed Funds rate for the foreseeable future, income investors have to look for additional yield in unconventional places. Even a traditional dividend paying common stock is likely to only have a yield in the neighborhood of 3%, which may not cut it for a retired household that is looking to extend their savings for many more years. The key to enhancing your income sources without taking an inordinate amount of risk is to carve out a small slice of your portfolio for avant-garde dividend paying sectors. Asset classes such as preferred stocks, MLPs, and REITs can often times be desirable because they do not correlate directly to equity or bond price movement. This allows you to diversify your portfolio holdings into areas of the market that may outperform traditional asset classes under the right circumstances. They can also help smooth out volatility by somewhat offsetting the price movement of other securities in your income mix. In 2013, the performance of these alternative strategies was a mixed bag. The area that saw the most strength was master limited partnerships, of which the Alerian MLP ETF (NYSEARCA:AMLP) is still the biggest of the group with over $7 billion in total assets. The commodity sector had a volatile year; however the income stream that MLPs derive from their infrastructure leasing and development has been rock solid. AMLP gained over 18% last year and is currently paying a yield of over 6%, which is distributed quarterly. One of the advantages of owning an ETF instead of an individual MLP is that you dont have to deal with the tax headache of a K-1 on your tax return and you get the benefit of diversification amongst a similar segment of companies. If the economy stays on track and commodity prices (i.e.

Rough Road Ahead For An Overly Bullish Stock Market?

Put Call Ratio updated

The red line in the primary http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20131207102553AAXvB0j section of the chart displays the Put/Call Ratios weekly average while the blue line displays its four week moving average. The weekly average is reaching levels only seen a few times since the rally that started in 2009 kicked off. The four week average meanwhile has just closed at its lowest level since 2005. This shows that options traders own an abnormally low level of puts compared to calls and suggests that options traders also have joined the other groups of investors by becoming one-sidedly bullish. A Warning, but not a Signal, yet On the surface these extremely low levels seem like a dire warning sign, but looking back at history provides some perspective. At the end of every year since 2009, the one week ratio has always spiked into very bearish territory, sometimes offering an opportunity but also sometimes providing a false signal (with no accompanying market decline). This is shown by the red arrows on the graphic. Highlighted by the red circles on the top graph showing the S&P 500, those end of year spikes that actually turned out to be a good warning are shown. At the beginning of 2010 and 2011 this indicator provided a good warning, but at the beginning of 2012 and 2013 it did not.

Student Loans Got You Down? 5 Tips To Make Them More Affordable

5 Things Student Loan Lawyers Ask Borrowers Who File For Bankruptcy

Pay down your principle. Much of your monthly payment will go to paying off the interest on your loan. You can actually reduce the amount of interest you pay over the life of the loan (and save money) by paying down the principal of the loan. If you can pay more than your monthly payment, pay down principal by adding a written note with your payment specifying that the surplus should be applied to your principal. Check out more information on paying more than your monthly requirement here .

Fewer than 1,000 people try each year. Those who do are required to file a lawsuit against their lenders and then convince a bankruptcy judge that theyre so poor theres no hope of ever repaying the loans. Lawyers for the U.S. Department of Education, which guarantees most of the roughly $1 trillion in outstanding student loan debt, have been criticized for making unreasonable arguments to sway judges that struggling borrowers can afford their monthly student loan payments. Here are five of them.

Student Loans: A Financial Bubble in the Making?

One day, analysts could be looking at rates even higher. But how bad would it have to get for a “bubble” effect, and what would that do to students whose bank accounts and earnings are on the line? “A bubble starts getting attention when it affects one-third of a relevant population,” says Kantrowitz. “One-third is the key factor. What this means is that these borrowers may not be able to save for their own kids’ college education because they’re devoting their money to paying back their own loans … and they won’t borrow from loan programs because they’re up to their eyebrows in their own student-loan debt.” Kantrowitz describes something familiar.
